One option that many photo sharing and blogging sites now offer is the ability to send the images from your phone directly to their site via email. Now your friends and family can view your pix messages on their computer, or even in their email, instead of on their tiny cell phone screen.
How to set this up?
Setting this up is easy and does not require programming ability. The tools are free and available to you. Just follow these steps:
- Setup a flickr account. You'll probably need a Yahoo! Id to do this, but it should be straightforward.
- Once setup, you'll need to setup your flickr upload by email address. On this page you can set the tag for all photos uploaded via email. I recommend using "pixmsg" for the tag. You will use this email address to send pix messages via your cell phone. Save this email address as a new contact on your cell phone so you don't have to type it every time.
- Try it out! Send a pix message to the flickr address. You should now see the picture in your flickr account. The subject of the pix message will show as the title. The body of the message will be the description of the photo.
- Email your friends links to your flickr account. People can view the pictures you upload on this page and even subscribe to it for updates.
My Setup
Here are some links to my setup. One thing I didn't mention above was the feed. When you visit the flickr page for your photos, there will be a link to a "feed". This is what other sites can use to display your pictures. One service, feedburner, even allows users to subscribe via email to any changes in the feed. Changes are sent via email to the subscribers. So now people don't have to keep checking your flickr account for updates, they just receive them via email. Pretty cool!
- Images tagged with "pixmsg" uploaded by my phone.
- The feed of the above page, added to feedburner: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Jefferazzi
- Subscribe by email to the feedburner feed.
